Central Alabama CrimeStoppers Has Increase in Arrests, Tips and Reward for 2011

See Annual Report

(January 12, 2012) -- Central Alabama CrimeStoppers, a local nonprofit organization that assists law enforcement in solving crimes, recorded 97 arrests, paid $7,975 in reward money, and took in 362 tips from the community in 2011. That is a 10 percent increase in arrests and 20 percent increase in tips and in rewards paid to anonymous tipsters.

CrimeStoppers credits the increase to more citizen involvement thanks to programs that allow the public to submit mobile and text tips. A “Tip Submit” mobile application (app) for iPhone and Droids operating systems was launched in 2011. The app is the first anonymous and fully featured smart phone application that lets the public submit tips to help solve and prevent crime. Users of the free app can submit secure and anonymous tips to CrimeStoppers programs.

Director of CrimeStoppers, Susan Moss, says another area that has become more active is the anonymous crime reporting system in local schools. Students are offered a $100 gift card for information that leads to the confiscation of weapons and drugs on campus.

Sixteen officers from the Montgomery Police Department and one deputy from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were trained to be School Resource Officers last August. These officers were taught specifically how to handle school safety and to protect students, faculty, and staff at the schools they are assigned and to help promote the anonymous crime reporting system.

The training was paid through grant money and a partnership between Central Alabama CrimeStoppers, Montgomery Public Schools, and the Montgomery Police Department. The grant money came from the Department of Justice Project Safe Neighborhoods and Safe Schools Healthy Schools.
