Area Crime Stoppers Help Law Enforcement Clear 92 Unsolved Cases
(Nov. 6, 2002) - Anonymous tips to Montgomery Area
CrimeStoppers from October 1, 2001 through September 30, 2002 helped local
law enforcement agencies clear 92 unsolved cases and make 34 arrests.
Crimes solved include robberies, thefts, domestic violence, sexual abuse,
sodomy, and possession of controlled substances. This brings the total
number of cases solved to 235 and number of arrests to 150 since
Montgomery CrimeStoppers began in May of 1997.
Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is a non profit organization
funded by a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community
Affairs. CrimeStoppers assist law enforcement from Montgomery, Autauga,
and Elmore Counties by profiling unsolved crimes through media resources.
Citizens are urged to call an anonymous crime tip hotline (215-STOP) if
they have any information that could help authorities solve the case. If
the tip leads to an arrest or solving of the case the anonymous caller
receives a cash reward. Since 1997, CrimeStoppers has paid $3,280 in
reward money. The reward fund comes from donations from individuals and
local businesses.
Susan Moss, Executive Director of CrimeStoppers, says a lot
of the callers refuse a cash reward. “Some callers are just
concerned citizens who want to put a stop to crime in their neighborhood
and community. However, we do offer the cash reward for callers who might
be reluctant to get involved. We have found that money and anonymity can
bring forward witnesses that might otherwise keep quiet about what they
have seen or heard.”
CrimeStoppers airs Mondays on WSFA News in the 6:00 Report. You can
