(April 21, 2005) -- The Wetumpka Youth Crime Watch was established three years ago through the sponsorship of the District Attorney's Office, under the leadership of Probation Officer Paul Griffin.
Today, the eighty Youth Crime Watchers and their advisor, Sgt. Tyrone White of the Wetumpka Senior High School ROTC Program, are actively involved in patrol as well as engaging in crime reporting. Their activities have resulted in six drug busts generating twelve criminal cases. Drug use is now down 65 percent. According to YCW President Jimmel Cox, smoking in bathrooms has decreased by 25 percent in the last year and by 75 percent over the past three years.
Officials have also noticed a reduction in gang activity as well as a complete disappearance of graffiti.
