(April 29, 2010) -- Central Alabama CrimeStoppers in partnership with US Attorney’s Office Middle District of Alabama, Montgomery Public Schools, and Alabama Crime Prevention Clearinghouse held a recognition lunch for 60 students who participated in a peer mediation program this school year.

Peer Mediation is a program that teaches students how to resolve conflicts in a peaceful manner. Susan Moss, Director of Central Alabama CrimeStoppers, says they have 11 schools that were active in the program this year. 12 students from each of the schools were trained last fall to implement the program that results in lower suspension rates and office referrals. Final numbers have not been recorded since the school year is not over, but as of March 31 of this year, the students mediated 175 conflicts and 93% (164) of the conflicts were successfully resolved.

Schools that participated this year include Bellingrath Jr. High, Brewbaker Intermediate, Davis Elementary, Floyd Elementary, Garrett Elementary, Houston Hill Jr. High, Lanier High, M.L. King Elementary, McIntyre Middle School, Wares Ferry Elementary and Wetumpka Middle School.

The program is funded in part by US Dept of Justice Project Safe Neighborhoods.
